ABSTRACT A freezing device is designed as a substantially closed container. The top side of the container has a feed opening (16) and a discharge opening. These ope- nings are located above a maximum level of a cooling medium in the container, which cooling medium in the gaseous state is heavier than air. A first tube extends through an additional opening in the top side of the container and forms an overflow. By means of this device, the level of the cooling medium is maintained constant in the container and excess cooling medium is removed by means of a second tube (32) and a pipe (36) connected to it.
