ADT 1271 C ABSTRACT Method and apparatus are disclosed for optically scanning and recording information on railroad cars moving at high speed to facilitate identification of the cars. The apparatus comprises equipment at track-side and at a remote location (usually, the yard). At track-side, there may be provided various detectors to sense the approach, proximity, speed, and direction of travel of a train. circuitry is provided to control operation of a camera focused on a passing train in response to information from the detectors. At the remote location, the optical signal from the camera is viewed immediately or recorded for later playback, at reduced speed if necessary, so that a human operator can read the identifying information on the sides of the train cars. The apparatus provides a completely automatic economical and reliable method for determining which railroad cars are in a train. No special coded labels must be put on the cars (as with many other systems) nor must passing trains be slowed to permit accurate reading.
