The subject of the invention is a device (converter) that acts as a front-end attachment to bi-directionally convert a microwave radar ranger signal to different frequency bands. The purpose of such a device is to allow a given radar ranging device, such as a radar level sensor, radar altimeter, radar distance gauge, radar proximity sensor etc, operate in different microwave bands than the original band. Such a frequency converter device allows the performance of a radar ranger to be enhanced beyond its original design specifications, or to modify certain radar ranger characteristics such as beam penetrability and beam width, in order to suit a larger variety of applications than the original radar ranger may have been designed for. For example: up-conversion to shorter wavelength allows smaller antenna sizes that can be fit through smaller fittings, and/or achieve narrower beam width, whereas down conversion to longer wavelength allows more robust operation under adverse environmental conditions such as moisture.
