A frequency diversity transmitter and receiver combination which is useful in mobile radio communication is provided. The transmitter transmits each symbol of an input symbol sequence after dividing it into a plurality (K) of chips and modulating these chips with mutually different carrier frequencies and the receiver receives the transmitted signal and demodulates it by means of local frequencies corresponding respectively with the K different carrier frequencies. The transmitter and receiver combination is characterized in that it is provided with a carrier frequency generating means which generates as the carrier frequencies for the chips, K types of signal with a predetermined initial phase and a local frequency generating means which generates, as the local frequency for each carrier frequency, a signal which is substantially in phase with the initial phase of the carrier.
