Aspects relate to frequency estimation and tracking. Frequency information is extracted based on an observation of a single symbol carrying pilot tones, which can be at any bandwidth location. Specifically, the frequency error information is ex-tracted after selecting pilot tone assigned to a specific user, transforming the selected pilot tone into time domain pilot signal, cor-relating it with a complex conjugate of the pilot signal, projecting the result to the upper half and lower half of the unit circle by multiplying the result with e and e respectively and calculating the difference of the magnitude square of the resultant vector sum of each half as the frequency error estimation. The frequency error can be corrected based on the estimation. Further, the disclosed aspects can be applied to multi-path environments.
