A bidirectional radio system for low cost high throughput accumulation of data from a large number of sites units (50). Frequency synchronisation is achieved at low cost by transmitting a hig accuracy carrier and clock signal at a base station (44), and using receiving circuitry at remote stations (46) to extract the base clock signal and base carrier frequency and a phase lock loop (242, 248, 254, 258) to stabilize the remote station carriers. A burst demodulator (156) at a base station receiver can decode a short remote station response by scaling the response with the phase and amplitude of an initial segment of the response. The burst demodulator (156) may continuously update the decoding threshold based on a comparison of the signal amplitude and the current value of the decoding threshold.

On obtient une synchronisation de fréquence de faible coût en émettant un signal porteur et un signal d'horloge de grande précisiau niveau d'une station de base (44) et en faisant appel aux circuits de réception des postes distants (46) pour extraire le signal d'horloge de base, la fréquence porteuse de base et la boucle à phase asservie (242, 248, 254, 258) afin de stabiliser les porteuses des postes distants. Dans le récepteur d'une station de base, un démodulateur par salves (156) peut décoder une réponse courte d'un poste éloigné en la mettant à l'échelle par rapport à la phase et à l'amplitude d'un segment initial de cette réponse. Le démodulateur par salves (156) est en mesure de mettre le seuil de décodage à jour de façon continue en comparant l'amplitude du signal et la valeur courante du seuil de décodage.
