13 ABSTRACT: In order to simplify the programming or repro- gramming of the available channel frequencies in a fre- quency synthesised multichannel radio apparatus, all the available frequencies are stored in a PROM (40) which acts as a look-up table. The addresses of those locations in the PROM (40) which are available to a user are stored in an electrically alterable storage means (42), such as an EAROM or a E2PROM. In normal operation a channel selector (24) selects a particular channel in the storage means (42) which in turn addresses predetermined locations in the PROM (40). If it is desired to programme/reprogramme the channel frequencies available to a user then a data transfer unit (34) which has been preprogrammed with the new channel frequencies is connected to the storage means (42) and the new sequence of channel frequency addresses is stored in the storage means. The reprogramming can be done with the apparatus in situ which saves time and avoids opening-up the apparatus.
