A lubricating oil composition comprising a major amount of base oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor amount of an additive comprising the reaction product obtained by reacting a cyclic carbonate and a hydrocarbyl amine having the formula: R1R2NH in which R1 is hydrogen, or a hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 40 carbon atoms, and R2 is a hydrocarbyl group containing 1 to 40 carbon atoms.
