ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A friction press is disclosed having a ram mounted on a threaded spindle, the spindle also carrying two driving wheels mounted at a distance apart in such positions as to be capable of coming into contact with two driving discs. The driving discs can be inclined relative to the vertical while being driven in opposite directions 80 that contact, and therefore drive, is established to either the upper or the lower driving wheel. The press can be operated by means of a contact on the ram and a system of rods and levers so that the drive is established to either the upper or lower driving wheel according to whether the ram is rising or falling.
