ABSTRACT The invention provides for a friction seal device for use in an annular space formed between cylindrical members such as a pump means and a casing means of an oil or gas well where the first of these cylindrical members has a surface against which the device is sealingly engaged and where the second of the cylindrical members has a surface for friction and sealing engagement with the device. The friction seal device comprises a first leg for sealingly engaging the surface of the first cylindrical member, and a second leg which is flexibly attached to the first leg in order to allow the legs to move relative to one another and the engagement surfaces of the cylindrical members particularly where there are dimensional changes to the engagement surfaces as for example where there is a change in pressure or temperature. The second leg is adapted to engage the surface of the second member such that there is a friction interference fit, whereby the cylindrical members will not move relative to one another once they are positioned despite having an externally exerted force tending to force the cylindrical members to move relative to one another. The second leg is also adapted to engage the second cylindrical member such that there is a sealing engagement.
