ABSTRACT Use of Phosphonic Acids as Collecting Agents in the Froth Flotation of Ores The invention concerns a process for concentra- ting mineral ores by froth flotation using as collecting agent a benzylphosphonic acid of formula I Image I wherein R1 is hydrogen, C1 to C6 alkyl, C1 to C6 halo- alkyl, C1 to C6 alkoxy or halogen, R2 is hydrogen, hydroxy, halogen or C1 to C6 alkyl and R3 is hydrogen or C1 to C6 alkyl, or R2 and R3 together form a methylene group. The process may be used for the flotation of a range of ores including ores of the metals tin, tungsten, and titanium, and is particularly useful in the flotation of the tin oxide ore cassiterite. Benzylphosphonic acid and .alpha.-hydroxybenzylphosphonic acid are particularly use- ful as collecting agents in the froth flotation of cassiterite.
