The emission of particulates and unburnt hydrocarbons in the exhaust gas emissions from liquid hydrocarbon fuels, especially diesel fuels and fuel oils is reduced by incorporating into the fuel an effective amount of an oil-soluble alkali, alkaline earth or rare earth complex of the formula: M(R)m.nL where M is the metal cation of valency m, R is the residue of an organic compound RH containing an active hydrocarbon atom, preferably a .beta.-diketone, n is an integer usually 1, 2, 3 or 4, and L is an organic donor ligand molecule (Lewis base).

On réduit l'émission de matières particulaires et d'hydrocarbures non brûlés dans les émissions de gaz d'échappement de combustibles d'hydrocarbures liquides, en particulier les gazoles et les mazouts, en incorporant dans le combustible une dose efficace d'un complexe alcalin, alcalinoterreux ou de terre rare soluble dans le mazout de formule M(R)m.nL dans laquelle M représente le cation métallique de valence m, R le reste d'un composé organique RH contenant un atome d'hydrocarbure actif, de préférence un beta -dicétone, n correspond à un entier, normalement 1, 2, 3 ou 4 et L représente une molécule de ligand donneur organique (base de Lewis).
