A bipolar plate separates and contacts an anode and a cathode of adjoining fuel cells arranged in a fuel cell stack. The bipolar plate is formed by a single integral sheet metal body which has a plurality of first raised areas facing the anode, forming contact surfaces for the anode and being spaced away from one another by spaces. A plurality of spaced second raised areas faces the cathode, forming contact surfaces for the cathode. The spaces between the first raised areas form flow paths for the fuel gas flowing on the anode sides of the bipolar plate. The spaces between the second raised areas form flow paths for the cathode gas flowing on the cathode side of the bipolar plate.
