A method is provided for making a supported catalyst comprising nanostructured elements which comprise microstructured support whiskers bearing nanoscopic catalyst particles, where the method comprises step a) of vacuum deposition of material from at least a first carbon target in the presence of nitrogen and step b) of vacuum deposition of material from a second target comprising at least one transition metal, the second target comprising no precious metals. In one embodiment, step a) is carried out prior to step b). In another embodiment, steps a) and b) are carried out simultaneously. Typically the deposition steps are carried out in the absence of oxygen. Typically, the transition metal is iron or cobalt, and most typically iron. The present disclosure also provides a supported catalyst comprising nanostructured elements which comprise microstructured support whiskers bearing nanoscopic catalyst particles made according to the present method. The present disclosure also provides a fuel cell membrane electrode assembly comprising the present supported catalyst.

L'invention porte sur le procédé d'élaboration d'un catalyseur supporté pour pile à combustible comportant des éléments nanostructurés comprenant des trichites supports microstructurées portant des particules de catalyseur nanoscopiques. Ledit procédé consiste: (a) à effectuer un dépôt sous vide d'un matériau provenant au moins d'une première source de carbone, en présence d'azote, et (b) à effectuer un dépôt sous vide d'un matériau provenant d'une deuxième source comprenant au moins un métal de transition, mais pas de métaux précieux. Dans une exécution l'étape (a) s'effectue avant l'étape (b), et dans une autre, les étapes (a) et (b) s'effectuent simultanément. Normalement, lesdits dépôts s'effectuent en l'absence d'oxygène, et le métal de transition est du cobalt ou plutôt du fer. L'invention porte également sur le susdit catalyseur supporté comportant des éléments nanostructurés comprenant des trichites supports microstructurées portant des particules de catalyseur nanoscopiques, obtenu selon le susdit procédé. L'invention porte en outre sur une membrane électrode de pile à combustible incluant le susdit catalyseur supporté.
