In contemporary aircraft, ram air turbines are used to provide emergency power given a failure of the engines or hydraulic systems. The ram air turbine system is mechanically complex in light of the out-folding mechanism and rotating components, and requires comprehensive maintenance. In an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, a fuel cell system is indicated for supplying power to an aircraft, comprising a fuel cell, a hydrogen tank and an oxygen tank. This advantageously provides for an emergency power supply for aircraft that is independent of the outside air, low maintenance and reliable.
