A polymer electrolyte membrane or gas diffusion electrode includes an ion- conducting polymeric material which includes moieties of formula (A) which are substituted on average with more than 1 and 3 or fewer groups (e.g. sulphonate groups) which provide ion-exchange sites and hydrogen atoms of said moieties are optionally substituted, wherein each X in said moieties of formula A independently represent an oxygen or sulphur atom. The ion conducting polymeric material is suitably prepared by controllably sulphonating a polymeric material using about 100% sulphuric acid at 34~C to 36~C.

L'invention concerne une membrane électrolytique polymère ou une électrode à diffusion gazeuse qui comporte un matériau polymère conducteur d'ions contenant des fractions de formule (A) qui sont substituées en moyenne avec plus de 1 et de 3 ou moins de groupes (par ex. des groupes sulfonate) qui constituent des sites d'échange d'ions. Les atomes d'hydrogène desdites fractions sont éventuellement substitués, et chaque X de ces fractions représente indépendamment de l'autre X un atome d'oxygène ou de soufre. Ledit matériau polymère conducteur d'ions peut être préparé de manière adéquate par sulfonation commandée d'un matériau polymère, au moyen d'approximativement 100 % d'acide sulfurique, à une température comprise entre 34 ·C et 36 ·C.
