A process for producing electricity in a fuel cell (14) which comprises reacting a higher carbon (C2+) hydrocarbon fuel with steam in a steam pre-reformer (10) at a temperature in the pre- reformer of no greater than 500 °C to produce a fuel stream including hydrogen and no less than about 20 % by volume methane measured on a wet basis, and supplying the fuel stream and an oxidant to a high temperature fuel cell (14) in which the methane is reformed and electricity is produced by reacting the fuel stream at an anode of the fuel cell and reacting the oxidant at a cathode of the fuel cell.

L'invention concerne un procédé permettant de produire de l'électricité dans une pile à combustible (14), qui consiste à faire réagir un combustible du type hydrocarbure hautement carboné (C2+) avec de la vapeur, dans un pré-reformeur (10) de vapeur à une température égale ou inférieure à 500 DEG C, afin de produire un flux de combustible comprenant de l'hydrogène et au moins 20 % par volume de méthane mesuré sur une base humide; et à fournir ledit flux de combustible et un oxydant à une pile à combustible (14) à température élevée, dans laquelle le méthane est reformé et l'électricité produite par réaction du flux de combustible au niveau de l'anode de la pile à combustible et par réaction de l'oxydant au niveau de la cathode de ladite pile à combustible.
