A method of commencing operation of a fuel cell system which includes a fuel reformer is provided. During a start-up period, the same fuel (14) which is used in the feedstock to the reformer (13) is directed to at least a portion of the fuel cells (11) in the system. These fuel cells provide output power by direct oxidation of the fuel, at least until the reformer is operational, producing a hydrogen-containing gas stream suitable for the fuel cells. Thus, useful output power can be obtained from the system without the delay typically associated with start-up of the reformer.

Procédé servant à commencer l'opération d'un système de pile à combustible comprenant un reformeur de combustible. Pendant un période de démarrage, le même combustible (14) utilisé dans la charge alimentant le reformeur (13) est dirigé vers au moins une partie des cellules (11) de combustible du système. Ces piles à combustible produisent un courant de sortie par oxydation directe du combustible, au moins jusqu'à ce que le reformeur soit opérationnel, ce qui produit un flux de gaz contenant hydrogène approprié pour les piles à combustible. Ceci permet d'obtenir une puissance de sortie utile depuis le système sans le retard associé normalement au démarrage du reformeur.
