ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and fuel cell for generating electric current are described in which hydrogen, hydrocarbon or other fuel is oxidized in said fuel cell in contact with (A) electrolyte comprising water having a pH in the range of about 5 to 10 under cell operating solutions, and in contact with (B) an anode for oxidizing said fuel, said anode having at least one lower sulfide of at least one transition metal present at the anode surface as electrocatalyst for oxidation of said fuel, said sulfide being present at the anode surface in sufficient amount to catalyze electrochemical oxidation of the fuel and being substantially immune to chemical and electrochemical attack under conditions of operation of said cell.
