It is described a unit consisting of a fuel cell, provided with a first ion- exchange membrane, and an electrolysis cell, equipped with a second ion- exchange membrane, capable of operating as electrochemical hydrogen pump. In particular, the electrolysis cell sucks in the discharge gas of the fuel cell anodic compartment which contains hydrogen as the main component, ionises the hydrogen on a suitable anodic catalyst, sends the so formed protons across the second ion-exchange membrane to a suitable cathodic catalyst where the protons are reconverted to hydrogen which is mixed to the fuel cell hydrogen feed. An internal hydrogen recycle is thereby established in the fuel cell anodic compartment by means of this device which allows to improve the performances. A multiplicity of fuel cell - electrolysis cell units may be assembled to constitute a package or stack capable of generating electrical energy with high voltages.
L'invention concerne une unité comprenant une pile à combustible présentant une première membrane échangeuse d'ions et une cellule d'électrolyse équipée d'une seconde membrane échangeuse d'ions, capable de fonctionner comme une pompe à hydrogène électrochimique. Plus précisément, la cellule d'électrolyse effectue une aspiration dans le gaz de décharge du compartiment anodique de la pile à combustible renfermant de l'hydrogène comme composant principal, ionise l'hydrogène sur un catalyseur anodique approprié, envoie les protons ainsi formés à travers la seconde membrane échangeuse d'ions vers un catalyseur cathodique approprié où les protons sont reconvertis en hydrogène, lequel est mélangé avec la charge d'hydrogène de la pile à combustible. Un recyclage interne d'hydrogène est ainsi établi dans le compartiment anodique de la pile à combustible au moyen de ce dispositif, de manière à améliorer ainsi les performances. Une pluralité d'unités de pile à combustible cellule d'électrolyse peuvent être assemblées, de manière à constituer un emballage ou un empilement capable de produire de l'énergie électrique à tensions élevées.
