A fuel injected combustion engine and method of operation are disclosed. Injection of fuel to a cylinder of the combustion engine is periodically suspended for individual operating cycles, when the engine is operated at less than full power. The operation of the engine is otherwise controlled by the amount of air supplied to each cylinder and the amount of fuel injected. The frequency or duration of the suspensions may vary in dependence on engine operating conditions as for example, determined by engine speed and throttle position, or an indicator of the quantity of air that is supplied to the engine. A stored mapping may control the frequency of suspensions. Suspension of injection of fuel results in additional scavenging strokes, which improve charging conditions for subsequent operating strokes.
