ABSTRACT Controlling the distribution of fuel injected directly into an engine combustion chamber by metering fuel into an air mass in a quantity dependent on the engine load, and injecting the fuel and gas charge so formed into the combustion chamber by an injector. The pressure of the gas effects the injection of the fuel and gas charge and the regulator controls the gas pressure with reference to the fuel pressure to maintain a steady differential therebetween. The regulator varies the fuel pressure with engine load to increase the fuel penetration at selected engine loads.
