ABSTRACT A fuel injection system is provided with a purging device for purging gas, including air and vapor, from the system. The device includes a pressure responsive valve permitting gas to flow from an inlet connected to the high pressure fuel injection line to a vent outlet, and blocking flow when gas has been purged from the system and fuel pressure rises. A first branch passage communicates between the inle and one side of the valve, and a second branch passage communicates between the inlet and the other side of the valve and also with the outlet. A restriction orifice in the second branch passage provides a fuel pressure drop thereacross but does not substantially drop gas pressure thereacross, such that pressurized fuel casues a higher pressure on the one side of the valve than on the other side of the valve, which pressure differential closes the valve.
