A B S T R A C T FUEL COMPOSITIONS AND USE A water-in-oil emulsion, suitable for use as a fuel, is an emulsion of water in a fuel oil containing from 5 to 35% by weight of water, based on the total weight of oil and water; the water containing, as emulsifying aid, from 0.05 to 5 ppm, based on the weight of water, of a mixture of a nonionic or anionic surface active agent and a protective colloid such as sodium alginate or carboxymethylcellulose. A preferred anionic surface active agent is a hydrolysed polyacrylamide. The water also preferably contains a water-softening agent (such as sodium gluconate, ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid and an alkali metal polyphosphate). The invention also consists in a method of generating heat by burning such an emulsion.
