A fuel preheating system for use with internal combustion engines is described. The system works on the principle that by preheating the fuel to an optimum temperature, more efficient combustion results. The fuel is preheated preferably by passing a fuel line (12) through a housing (2) which carries heated engine coolant from the engine block (8) to the radiator (9). The preheated fuel is mixed with cooled or unheated fuel, to produce the desired fuel temperature. The mixing is controlled via a microprocessor (32), to produce the optimum temperature for the operating conditions at any given time, by sensing certain operating parameters (40, 42, 44, 52, 54) and regulating the mixing in response to those parameters. Fuel consumption is monitored under steady state conditions, and the fuel temperature is adjusted to minimize the fuel consumption.
