ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for controlling the amount of fuel to be supplied to the reaction shaft in the operation of a flash melting furnace wherein the difference between the actual and desired temperatures of tapped matte is larger than a predetermined allowable value and which comprises adjusting the amount of fuel to be supplied to the reaction shaft to a value obtained by subtracting a sum of corresponding amounts of fuel for correcting the gas temperature at the reaction shaft and for correcting proportionally to the dif- ference between the actual and desired temperatures of tapped matte from the theoretical amount of fuel for maintaining the gas temperature at the reaction shaft to a desired temperature. The corresponding amount of fuel for correct- ing the gas temperature at the reaction shaft is calculated by multiplying a predetermined amount of fuel by the difference between the theoretical and corrected gas temperatures. The corresponding amount of fuel for correcting proportionally to the difference between the actual and desired temperatures of tapped matte is calculated by multiplying the difference between the actual and desired temperatures of tapped matte by a predetermined amount of fuel in correlation - 1 - with the predetermined amount of fuel for correcting the gas temperature at the reaction shaft. - 2 -
