ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An explosion suppression system for use with fuel tanks and tank cars used to transport hazardous liquids is described. A concentric inner shell spaced from the outer wall of the tank and open along the bottom thereof is provided in the tank. In the event of a fire pressure builds up in the tank until the pressure relief valve opens causing a pressure differential between the outer annulus and the inner cavity, thereby raising the liquid level in the annulus and reducing the area of outer shell exposed only to vapour. The outer wall is significantly cooled by exposure to the high heat transfer coefficient liquid. In addition high rate vapour flow through the annulus increases droplet entrainment and helps to increase cooling efficiency.
