ABSTRACT A gate for use in a throttling valve is disclosed as used on a tundish. The gate comprises a generally rectangu- lar refractory body having a longitudinal axis and a lateral axis transverse thereto a through-opening through the body defining a metal flow orifice and the metal flow orifice being disposed on the lateral axis of the gate in offset re- lation to the longitudinal axis, with the extent of the off- set being in excess of the radius of the teeming orifice. The sliding gate when used in a valve is shiftable into pos- ition and then may be translated laterally for throttling and full shutoff. In the full shutoff configuration this allows a tube holder of the tundish disk to be moved in and out of position quickly. The gate, when used in a tundish, provides increased control and facilitates fast replacement of various components.
