ABSTRACT A burner 10 is mounted on top of a regenerator 11 by a pipe connector 13, The combustion chamber of the burner 10 communicates with the furnace interior via a tunnel 12 and with the interior of the rgenerator 11 comprises a packing 14 of ceramic amterial with a tubular casing 15 of ceramic fibres. An electrical heating element is mounted in the pipe connector 13 (Figure 1) or is situated near the top of the packing 14 (Figure 2) so that it heats a stream of air or gas which is passed through the pipe connector 13 and the packing 14.
