A fully automated system and method for rapidly and reliably detecting the ingestion of furnace material within the tip of a metal making lance. The system utilizes a temperature sensor disposed adjacent to the inner surface of the inner wall of a metal making lance tip. The sensor is in communication with a control station. The control station is preferably in operative communication with a valve for shutting off gas flow to the lance and, optionally, at least one alarm, a coolant fluid shut-off valve, and any other lance operation mechanisms as may be desired or necessary when furnace material is detected by the sensor. The inner wall of the lance tip is also preferably formed with a furnace material collecting reservoir for collecting ingested furnace material and directing it toward the temperature sensor for quick and reliable furnace material detection.

L'invention concerne un système et un procédé entièrement automatisés pour une détection rapide et fiable de l'ingestion de matériau de four dans le bout d'une lance de fabrication de métal. Le système fait appel à un capteur de température disposé au voisinage de la surface intérieure de la paroi intérieure du bout d'une lance de fabrication de métal. Le capteur est en communication avec un poste de commande. Le poste de commande est de préférence en communication opérationnelle avec une vanne destinée à couper l'écoulement de gaz vers la lance et éventuellement avec au moins une alarme, une vanne de coupure de fluide de refroidissement et tous autres mécanismes de fonctionnement de la lance qui pourraient être souhaitables ou nécessaires lorsque du matériau de four est détecté par le capteur. La paroi intérieure du bout de la lance est également de préférence formée avec un réservoir de collecte du matériau de four destiné à collecter le matériau de four ingéré et à le diriger vers le capteur de température en vue d'une détection rapide et fiable du matériau de four.
