ABSTRACT A solid fuel fired auxiliary furnace has an extension nozzle for insertion into a combustion tube of a boiler, such as a boiler designed for oil or gas firing, so that the products of combustion produced in the furnace pass along the combustion tube of the boiler to a closed end thereof, reverse direction and pass back through a space between a nozzle and the combustion tube of the boiler to a smoke box. In this way, the number of passes of the boiler is increased from x to x + 1.
