ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention is concerned with novel furobenzis- oxazole derivatives having the general formula: (I) Image wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 which may be the same or differ- ent represent a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, or a lower alkyl group having 1 - 4 carbon atoms; R5 is a hydroxymethyl group, a carboxyl group or a lower alkoxy carbonyl group having 1 - 3 carbon atoms; and X is a sulfur atom or a -CH=CH- group, as well as the pharma- ceutically acceptable salts thereof when R5 is a carboxyl group. The derivatives of the formula (I) and their pharmaceutically acceptable salts have hypotensive, uri- cosuric and diuretic activities and hence are useful as therapeutics for treating hyperuricemia, edema and hypertension.
