A soil opener is provided for use in placing a seed or fertilizer into the soil. The soil opener is arranged to be mounted on a tool bar arranged to be drawn across the soil in a forward working direction such that the soil opener opens a furrow in the soil. The opener comprises a flat disc and a convex disc mounted adjacent each other for free rotation about respective axes. The opener further includes a disc mount which is arranged to mount the discs on the tool bar with the respective axes of the flat disc and concave disc being oriented transversely to the forward working direction and offset from horizontal such that the discs are inclined from vertical. The inclination of the discs from vertical may be adjustable to accommodate different planting and fertilizing conditions.
