A fuse includes a fuse tube and an indicator attached to an outer surface thereof for indicating an operational state of the fuse. The indicator is a conductive coating applied directly to the fuse tube outer surface, or to a nonconductive indicator strip that is adhered to the outer surface of the fuse tube. The conductive coating extends at least partially between an inner surface of a fuse end assembly and the fuse tube outer surface and completes an electrical connection with conductive portions of the end assemblies. The conductive coating is configured to physically transform when current is passed through the indicator after a primary fuse link is opened, thereby indicating that a primary fuse link of the fuse has been opened and that the fuse is inoperative.
