ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The invention provides a method and an apparatus for the jointing of two pipe lengths, or one pipe length and a fitting, of plastics material by fusion welding. The method comprises clamping one end of a first pipe length, squeezing that end into circular shape, clamping and fitting, axially aligning the clamped end of the first pipe length and fitting, heating in spaced apart relationship the surfaces that are to be fusion welded together and, after the surfaces have attained the required fusion tempera- ture, bringing the surfaces into contact to effect fusion welding. The apparatus of the invention comprises a frame on which a pair of claims are slidably mounted so as to be movable towards or away from one another. One or both clamps are dimensioned so as to be capable, in use, of squeezing an end of the first pipe length or the ends to be joined of the first and second pipe lengths into circular shape or, alternatively, with one of the clamps dimensioned to grip, in use, a fitting. Means are also provided to axially align the ends of the first pipe length and the second pipe length or the end of the first pipe length and the end of the fitting. A heating device is adjustably mounted on the apparatus.
