- 37 - ABSTRACT If input values (input variables x1 x2,..., xn) applied to a fuzzy inference engine (1) fall within a range of defined reasoning rules that have been set in the fuzzy inference engine (1), a fuzzy reasoning operation is performed correctly and an output value obtained as a result of this operation is delivered through a selector (6). In a case where an input value is outside the range of defined reasoning rules owing to, say, an error in the setting of the reasoning rules, the memberships of the antecedents of all rules becomes zero and the fuzzy reasoning operation can no longer be performed. The number of times this state in which the reasoning operation is disabled is counted by a counter (3). If this state continues successively for a prescribed number of times (C), a specified output value Ys set previously in a memory (4) is delivered through the selector (6).
