The present invention relates to an optical amplifier system in which multiple laser cavities are utilized to control the gain of an erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). More specifically, the present invention is directed to an optical amplifier comprising a gain medium such as an erbium doped optical fiber which provides gain for an optical signal propagating therein. The gain medium also provides gain for a plurality of laser cavities (e.g. first and second laser cavities) which simultaneously oscillate at individual (e.g. first and second) wavelengths. The inventive optical amplifier results in reduced variation in gain spectrum as a function of input signal power, as a function of wavelength, and as a function of time. By varying the optical attenuation in one or more of the individual laser cavities it is possible to vary the gain spectrum of the gain medium at the corresponding individual wavelength and this controls the shape of the gain spectrum of the gain medium.

La présente invention concerne un système d'amplificateur optique dans lequel on utilise plusieurs cavités laser pour commander le gain d'un amplificateur à fibres dopées à l'erbium. L'invention concerne plus particulièrement un amplificateur optique comprenant un milieu de gain tel qu'une fibre optique dopée à l'erbium qui assure un gain à un signal optique s'y propageant. Le milieu de gain assure un gain également à une pluralité de cavités laser, notamment les premières et secondes cavités laser, qui oscillent simultanément à des longueurs d'ondes distinctes, c'est à dire une première et une seconde longueur d'ondes. L'amplificateur optique de l'invention aboutit à un moindre écart du spectre de gain en fonction de la puissance du signal d'entrée, en fonction de la longueur d'ondes, comme en fonction du temps. Cette modulation de l'atténuation optique dans l'une au moins des différentes cavités laser, qui permet de moduler le spectre de gain du milieu de gain aux différentes longueurs d'ondes considérées, permet également de commander le profil du spectre de gain du milieu de gain.
