ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention is concerned with new galac- tose derivatives having the formula: Image wherein R1 is benzyl or Image R and R2 are hydrogen or benzyl when R1 is benzyl, other- wise R and R2 are hydrogen, acetyl or benzyl, R3 and R4 are hydrogen or R3 together with R or R4 form iso- propylidene, R5 is benzyl or allyl and R6 is hydrogen, acetyl or benzyl. These new compounds are useful inter- mediates for the synthesis of gangliosides.
