Disclosed is a gallium-containing zinc oxide which is improved in heat ray shielding performance while maintaining high transparency to visible light. Specifically disclosed is a gallium-containing zinc oxide having heat ray shielding function wherein the gallium content is 0.25-25% by weight and the carrier electron density ne is not less than 2 ~ 1020 /cm3.
