A game target can be used by a single individual for practising skills in a game that involves the throwing of an object to a particular position on a playing surface. One example is curling. The target includes a rail that is supported to extend laterally across and above the game surface. A target element depends from the rail. In preferred embodiments the target element can be positioned at any desired location along the rail. This allows an individual to practise alone, without another party to hold the target, e.g. a broom in curling. The movement of the target element along the rail may be accomplished with a carriage mounted on the rail for movement along the rail and with the target element depending from the carriage. A further improvement is achieved where the target includes a carriage drive for controllably moving the carriage to any selected position along the rail. Embodiments of the invention with the carriage drive may include a remote control means for the carriage drive.
