An article of safety clothing has a vent portion that is constructed substantially from a breathable and substantially open textured flame resistant material. The flame resistant material presents a substantially smooth surface to a wearer in use, and is preferably a mesh material constructed from an aromatic polyamide (aramid) fiber having low stiffness and high elongation so as to provide textile-like characteristics and enabling processing of the fiber on conventional textile equipment. Alternately, the flame resistant material may comprise a flame resistant perforated fabric, a flame resistant lattice type fabric, and/or a flame resistant open work fabric. Further still, the flame resistant material may be rendered flame resistant by treating a surface of the material with a flame retardant chemical, and/or by infusing such a chemical into the very core of the fibers.
