Abstract Alcohols and hydrogen sulfide are recovered from a mixture containing a phosphorus compound of the formula: (R1O)(R2O)P(S)SH where R1 and R2 are each aliphatic or aromatic groups. The mixture is preheated to a temperature of about 20°C to about 115°C, and is then rapidly adjusted to a temperature of about 80°C to about 180°C for a period of time which is sufficient to substantially separate the alcohol or hydrogen sulfide from the phosphorus compound without the substantial generation of hydrogen sulfide or without the substantial generation of additional hydrogen sulfide.
