A gas assisted injection molding apparatus includes a molding injection assembly comprising an extruder barrel having an elongated screw ram that is axially and rotatably positioned therein. A quantity of gas is introduced into a charge within the extruder barrel to form a combined charge of plastic and gas prior to the combined charge leaving the extruder barrel. In one embodiment, the gas enters the extruder barrel through a channel formed axially through the elongated screw ram. In another embodiment, the gas enters the extruder barrel through a probe that is movable through a port formed in the side of the barrel body to thereby deliver a gas charge to the center of the plastic charge.
