The floating life of toy elastomeric balloons inflated with helium is greatly increased through modifying polyvinyl alcohol coatings from the prior art by removing the glycerine plasticizer from the coating and adding an extender comprised of a saccha- ride, such as dextrose, at levels up to four times the weight of polyvinyl alcohol. The improved coatings of the present invention typically give double the floating life of the prior art coatings under a wide range of humidifies.
