ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Addition of CF4 or C2F6 to SF6 for use as the arc-extinguishing gas in a gas blast circuit breaker results in a high dielectric strength breaker employing the gas at high operating pressure, without need for excessively heating the gas. The breaker thereby exhibits increased speed of thermal recovery and dielectric recovery. Carbonization is also reduced since the mixture forms stable CS gas, instead of solid carbon, in the presence of an arc.
