ABSTRACT This invention is for a process for preparing a supported sorbent for removing at least a portion of acidic gases from a gaseous mixture containing an acidic gas selected from the group consisting of hydrogen sulfide, carbonyl sulfide and mixtures thereof, which process comprises: first steam treating an inorganic oxide support for a period of time sufficient to decrease the surface area thereof and subsequently compositing the steam treated support with a rare earth metal component. The sorbent is used in a gas desulfurization process.
