-10- IMPROVED GAS DIFFUSION ELECTRODE ABSTRACT An improved gas diffusion electrode is produced by coating spinel-treated carbon black particles with one or more of sugars, phenolics and epoxides such that a substantially continuous coating of conductive carbon char forms on the particles when pyrolyzed to form activated carbon. The coated particles have a penetration coefficient of less than about 1.2 x 103 cm2/sec.
