A B S T R A C T Disclosed is a gas-discharge overvoltage arrester comprising two opposing main electrodes and a central electrode surrounding the discharge-gap annularly and coaxially, the said central electrode being connected to the main electrodes by an annular insulating housing, the inside of which carries at least one ignition-strip of electrically conducting material extending over a part of the length of the tube. This arrester is intended to display high con- sistency of its electrical data during and after surge-current-, alternating- current-, and long-life-loading. To this end, according to the invention, the main electrodes constituting a discharge gap are stepped inwardly in the form of double-cylinders and have resilient transitions at the ends of the insulating housing; the central electrode, forming a main discharge-yap with each of the two main electrodes, is in the form of a hollow cylinder with a divergent conical profile; and all of the electrodes are provided, in overlap areas, with an electrode-activating substance. The overvoltage arrester according to the invention is used as a dual-path arrester, for example in protecting communica- tion lines opening jointly into high-rise buildings.
