GAS EXPANSION/COMPRESSION TRAIN Abstract of the Disclosure A stream of gas, e.g., natural gas to e.g., a reforming operation, is divided, and the two streams are interacted so as to lower the pressure and raise the temperature of one while doing the reverse to the other. The first stream is at high pressure and it is passed through an expander turbine which is coupled to a com- pressor. The first stream is reduced in pressure and tem- perature. The second stream passes through the compressor where it increases in pressure and becomes hotter. This hot second stream is then cooled by sending it through a heat exchanger where it heats up the low pressure first stream. The system finds use in ammonia, methanol or hydrogen plants wherein natural gas is used both as feedstock and as a fuel.
