A gas generator, in particular for inflating a passenger-protecting airbag, has a load container (3) in which is arranged a gas-building material (4), an electric igniting element (1) to ignite the gas-building material (4), a whirl chamber (25) designed as a centrifugal dust separator and a plunging pipe (18) that is arranged on the axis of symmetry (26) of the whirl chamber (25) and projects into the whirl chamber (25). The cleaned gas stream reaches an outflow chamber (27) in the airbag through said pipe (18). In order to improve the cleaning effect with a compact and simple device, load container (3), igniting element (1), whirl chamber (25), plunging pipe (18) and outflow chamber (27) are arranged on a common axis of symmetry (26) and the whirl chamber (25), plunging pipe (18) and outflow chamber (27) form a module that is coupled to the load container (3) and igniting element (1) by a connecting element (7).
